Teaser Tuesday

Hello once again, readers!

It’s been awhile since I’ve written. Blame it on NaNo WriMo… which I did complete by the way.

So what if it was just barely lol with a mere 51k.

I chose to work on Everlost (Night Watchmen, #3), since I had only just finished and published Evernight. I figured it would give me a good nudge to work through the holidays so I can get the third book out as soon as possible. And, even though it was like pulling teeth trying to force myself to sit down and commit every day, I did it.

But I digress.

I’m now 59k in, with a goal of at least 100k. My first drafts never reach 100k due to all the detail I go back and add after my first read through, so I’d say I’m close to 70% done with the first draft.

Can I get a woohoo?

Any who, if you haven’t finished Evernight, you might not want to read what’s below. It’s not a complete spoiler, but it does sort of hint on something that is addressed at the end of book two. So you might want to hurry up and read Evernight.

That being said, here is the teaser:

This isn’t going to end well.

She isn’t supposed to be here, outside this house, across the yard, staring at me like I’m a two-headed vampire about to suck the life from her veins. Her words aren’t supposed to be so intoxicating. Her gaze isn’t supposed to be the kind that glues you in place, turning your brain to mush and your instincts to that of a moth to a flame.

Evangeline Gramm… the woman who escaped the infamous Gramm Curse. The mother who so easily abandoned her two boys. The Witch who has passed under the Primeval Coven’s radar longer than anyone ever thought possible.

She could be our worst nightmare… or she could be the key to finding our salvation.

I thought the worst had come to pass the night we barely escaped from Ethryeal City. We were officially shunned from the Coven under Clara’s orders, Jaxen had been wounded, and we weren’t any closer to bringing Clara down.

But none of that can touch the look on Jaxen’s face when he found his mother standing feet away from him, with an army we never saw coming behind her.

And I’m not sure what’s going to happen now. I’m not sure he’s ready to face his past… the same way I’m not ready to face my future.

But being born a Primeval means that pain isn’t an option—it’s a standard. We can’t escape it. There’s no silver lining in our line of work. There aren’t any small miracles that can relieve us from this hell.

There’s just fear and determination.

That’s it. That’s all we have to drive us forward.

I just hope this time we make it through.

And scene.

This is actually the prologue. The opening scene. It’s vague, but not so vague that you’re like, “Huh?” Like I said, it’s not a real spoiler… but for those of you who have read Evernight, you know what I’m trying to say.

In other news, the cover for Everlost is complete! It’s amazing, and everything I asked for when talking the idea over with Ravven. I’m working on the blurb right now and will be setting up the cover reveal within the next few weeks (as I near the end of the first draft).

The holidays are a crazy busy time for everyone.

Hope to write you soon.

Unlit Star by Lindy Zart

Unlit Title

Rivers Young was the popular guy untouchable by reality. He was like a star—bright, consuming, otherworldly. The thing about stars, though, is that they eventually fall, and Rivers Young was no different.

He fell far and he fell hard.

Delilah Bana was the outcast enshrouded in all of life’s ironies. Alone, in the d…ark, like dusk as it falls on the world. When Rivers fell from the sky, she was the night that caught him. In the darkness, they found one another. Together they melded into something beautiful that shone like the sun.

Only, the greater the star is, the shorter its lifespan.

“You could always come work at the flower shop with me. I’m sure your flower arrangements would be extraordinary.”

“You’re really not as funny as you think you are, you know that?”

“I’m funnier,” I say, poking his stomach. A tiny light blinks above his shoulder and I grab his arms and whirl him around. “Look! It’s a lightning bug.” I bounce on the balls of my feet.

He looks over his shoulder at me. “You act like you’ve never seen one before.”

“I love lightning bugs,” I breathe. “I used to spend hours every summer catching and releasing them.”

“Like a true fisherman of bugs.”

I squint my eyes at him. “Come on—let’s catch some.” Without waiting for his answer, I skip forward, turning in a circle as I catch blips of glowing orbs in that magical time between partial dark and full. I spy one in the grass by my feet and reach a hand down, holding still as the bug lands on my fingers. “Go on, little buggy, go home before the storm comes.” It flies away, lighting up as it goes, and I smile as I straighten.

His breath tickles the side of my neck as he says, “You are the sweetest version of quirky I have ever had the pleasure of seeing in motion.”

I laugh softly. “Thank you. Glad you got to see me in action.”

He wraps his arms around my midsection and rests his chin on my shoulder. “Don’t ever change.”

“I do what I want,” I say, just to say it.

Rivers’ hold tightens. “That’s the exact thing I don’t want to ever change about you.”
