Branford High School Visit

Hello once again, readers!!!

Well, the author meet & greet was a success!! I was a ball of nerves for most of the day just because this was my first real public speaking, but it was all worth it. Being around the students and talking about the rewards of writing was such a humbling experience. The students were so well-behaved and polite, and the all seemed to have a genuine interest in the things we were talking about.

What more could you ask for when entertaining teens for a day?

We were greeted with southern hospitality and spent the day in good company. There were seven of us total (authors), and we all had a chance to speak to the students and share our thoughts on the process of writing. At the end of the day, we had tables set up for us in the library where the students, parents, and teachers could come and meet us. The picture below is me at Sonya Loveday’s table. Yes, my face is blurry lol. She had shaky hands and we were on a set schedule so there wasn’t enough time to take perfect photos. My table was right next to hers.1451436_10201601938903550_126528835_nThey also put awesome gift baskets on each of our tables. The students crafted the boxes themselves, and filled them with all kinds of goodies. It was so unexpected and appreciated.

When the day came to an end, Sonya and I found a wall where they had each of our bio’s and books up. It was so awesome being around so many students who appreciated literature and the craft of writing. They were so eager to learn and so full of questions, most of them dabbling in writing themselves. How cool, right? I don’t think to date that I have done something so rewarding in my career.

wallI can’t wait to go back next year.

Embracing the Flames 99¢ Sale

1016105_388014354636172_2109477905_nHello once again, readers! Check out this awesome fan art done by Tarnya. She is so talented. She is also the one responsible for making Born in Flames and Embracing the Flames necklaces and key chains. I am sending her an eHug right now…

Okay, so my publisher, 48fourteen, did a vote yesterday on Facebook. It was for the readers to choose which novel out of their collection they wanted to see put to 99¢ for 24 hours. Embracing the Flames won! It has been at 99¢ since yesterday and only has a little bit of time left at that awesome price. (I know, I’m a little late in telling you)What kind of self-marketing author would I be if I didn’t at least mention that to you lovely people?!

Any who, since last night, the sales ranking has dropped and put me at #42 in Fairy Tales and #57 in Mythology. Of course this is something I did and am still doing a happy dance over. Yes, people, I am still dancing as I type… Just kidding. You know, I’m never sure if it’s good etiquette or not to share these types of things, but I just get so excited and want to share it with everyone lol.

I digress.

In other news, I discovered this website called Authorgraph. It’s a site where readers can request their favorite author’s autograph for their ebooks. It comes in a pdf file in their email I think. It’s pretty neat. I set an account up for myself so if you’re interested, you can find me here: I think there’s a widget for it so I will fiddle around with that to add onto my page. You know, since I have nothing better to do besides succumbing to my ADD and avoiding what I should be doing which is working on my WIP.

Did I really just say that?

And lastly, I’ve placed an order with my publisher for the Born in Flames paperbacks. With the Indie Bookest being less than three weeks away, I figured now would be the best time to order them. If you live in Florida and are close to Disney, you should totally get a ticket and come see me. Plus, I have a few pending orders waiting and a few people who won a copy that I must send them off to.

I think that’s it.

Next weekend I will be training for my scuba certification. The days can’t move quick enough. Not that it matters or has influence on your life in any way lol.

That being said, here’s the question of the day: What genre of reading do you prefer? I am going to be totally predictable and say my favorite is young adult. No brainer there, right?

Who Are You Again?

431104_10200488608195765_1861929368_nHello once again Readers!!!!!! Like the fan art of Aurora? I think it friggin’ rocks! I have a ton more that I will share with you in another post. I love it. It just makes me feel so giddy inside.

But I digress.

Okay…so I know I have been M.I.A on here. And maybe even that is an understatement. But I swear I have reasons! Valid ones too!

First off, I finished From the Embers (the final book in the Born in Flames trilogy) and submitted that to my publisher. She is nearly finished reading it and waiting on me for a blurb to put into the contract. In the meantime, she had returned her final read through of Embracing the Flames with notes I needed to go over before it could go to formatting.

I went back into the editing cave and closed myself off. That is all I have been doing for the past week. It took me a little bit of time because it’s my last chance to make it how I want it before it lands in your hands. And because I am OCD.

That being said, my read through of Embracing the Flames is complete as of today and it is now back with my publisher being formatted. We are looking at the next two to three weeks for a release date. Can you believe it!? The day is almost near. For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about, here is the cover of book one and two:

Any who, so now that Embracing the Flames is on its way… I must go back to the formatted print version off Born in Flames and read through it before it gets sent of to the printer. HAPPY FREAKING DANCE!!!! I can’t wait to hold my book! And just in time for the Indie BookFest I will be attending in August.

Deep breath.

It’s all coming together…I just have to learn how to keep up. I am so excited…you just don’t even know.

As for slacking on the blog, I am very sorry. I want to blog so bad, but between taking care of my two-year old, babysitting a three-month old, and finding the time to market, write, edit, and everything else that fits into the job description, well, I’m sure you catch my drift. I’ve discovered I am not Wonderwoman, sadly enough.

There goes that dream. o_O

Now to leave you with a question: Who’s looking forward to reading Embracing the Flames?!!

Born in Flames- 2012 Turning the Pages Books “Book of the Year” Winner!

Hello once again, Readers!!! Guess who won Book of the Year over at Turning the Pages Books!!!??? Excuse me while I do some cart-wheels and run in circles… :)

Okay, I’m back. And out of breath.

It was a close race, and I never expected to win, but the Readers have chosen! I am So. Freaking. Excited! Does this mean that I can call my novel “award-winning”?? I couldn’t wait to tell my son. He has been asking me about it for like the past five days. Every day he says, “Mother, did you win?” (Yes my six-year-old calls me mother…lol). So you can imagine when I found out last night, after his bedtime, how hard it was for me to wait until this morning. His grin this morning before school was the best part of this whole thing. I made him proud!

Okay now I’m tearing up. I digress.

And to make it even more exciting, I am going to be on a Blog Talk Internet Radio Show with Fran Lewis on March 14th to talk about Born in Flames! Woot! (I am extremely nervous about this just because I’ve never done it before…so I’m crossing my fingers it goes well). Thank you for believing in me and for supporting my debut novel! I hope that it’s only up from here!

But I digress once more.

In other, exciting news, I am still holding a BIG giveaway on my Facebook page for when I reach 500 Likes. So far, the first prize I have revealed is a $25 Amazon gift card. Cha-ching! My current tally is sitting at 388 Likes so there is plenty of time to Like and try to win! For every 50 Likes up until I reach 500, I am giving away an ecopy of my novel. Exciting stuff.

Hopefully the cover will soon be complete for Embracing the Flames and then a new round of excitement, giveaways, and promotion will begin.

Now to leave you with a question: Who put the cookies in the cookie jar?

A Street Team Giveaway!!

photo credit: richcianci via photopin cc

Hello once again, Readers!!! Happy turkey week!! I hope you ate enough to feed an army…I sure did. I’m telling you, this sure has been a crazy month. NaNo has been a constant pull at my attention and I am continuously falling behind and catching back up. It’s a crappy cycle to be stuck in.

It’s all of life’s fault.

But if I combine my NaNo project and the word count in From the Embers, I have surpassed the 50k mark. That wasn’t my goal though. I still have time to finish on time…I hope. My current word count is 33k for Starfall. I have high hopes that I will finish in time. I’m not a quitter.

But you didn’t come here just to hear me whine so I digress…

In the spirit of the holiday season (and black Friday craziness), I wanted to do a Street Team giveaway. I currently only have five followers on my FB page for the Street Team. I’m hoping for more because it is a special page just for inside info on the novels and special giveaways.

So if you’re interested in joining and winning a one-of-a-kind necklace, follow the following link and click like: Street Team Little Flames.

Here is the necklace that is up for grabs:

  1. Follow the link and click ‘like’ to become a “Little Flame”.

Easy right? I know… it’s the season to give. The contest will run until I post again and I will notify the winner either through FB or through the blog. I’m hoping to have another post out by next weekend, but you know how that goes. Life happens and the blog suffers for it.

But anyway, I hope to see you there! As soon as my edits are in for Embracing the Flames, I want to share an excerpt on the page. Hope the crowd is bigger than five lol. I have big plans and little time.

Happy Holidays!!!

10 Questions To Get To Know Your Characters

photo credit: Βethan via photopin cc

Hello once again, Readers!!!So I wanted to blog about something important since NaNo is in a couple of days. I have been going back and forth with myself on whether or not I am going to try it. I’m just not sure I can squeeze both, From the Embers and another WIP, in at the same time. I think what I will do is attempt it, but not hold my breath. If I succeed then more power to me, but if not, then oh well…there is always next year.

But I digress.

Let’s talk characters. It is important to jump into NaNo with a clear idea on who you are going to be writing about. If you aren’t sure yet, don’t fret…you are only a few steps away from figuring it out! There is an easy way to familiarize yourself with your characters so you will be a set for the big month. 10 steps to success!

Below I have compiled a series of questions that I use for my own character development. These are basic questions that will mold your character into a real, believable person that a reader can relate to. So grab a notebook and a pen and lets begin (I’m a poet and didn’t know it…lol)!

  1. What does your character look like? (Try to really envision this person. If you aren’t clear on the appearance, neither is the reader)
  2. Detail you characters appearance down to scars on their body and how they got them. Hair, hygiene, style, ect.
  3. List five personality traits and then detail each one as to why they are that way. (Make sure there are good and bad traits. For the bad, explain why and how it affects others. Do enemies occur from this trait? For the good, how they got that way and what ways they use it in their daily life.)
  4. Greatest strength versus greatest flaw. (They need to have at least one of each to avoid Mary-sue-itis.)
  5. What are their likes and dislikes? (Take time to get to really know them. What do they find attractive in the world and in people. What do they despise in the world and in people? Make them as real as possible down to food choice and movie selection.)
  6. What is their dream/aspiration? What goals have they set?
  7. Where were they born and who raised them? (Get into detail on who raised them and how this molded their POV.)
  8. What is unique about your character? (The reader needs something to root for. Something that sets them apart from every other book out there.)
  9. What is their biggest fear? (Knowing this will help you add this into the plot as a character builder. Something they can overcome by character growth.)
  10. Do they have a love interest? How do they feel about love? (You need to know how they deal with relationships.)

If you take a good day to sit down and answer all of these questions, then you are on the right path to writing a believable character. Keep these notes with you and read them again and again to really familiarize yourself with them. Soon enough, it will be a no brainer. Your character will be as real as you or me.

From there you can begin plotting your story or like me, wait until the last minute and just write. I don’t limit myself with a chapter by chapter outline. It’s too confining. I have an idea where I want the story to go and I try to stick with it.

Now I have three characters that I need to sit down and interview! This is the fun part. The beginning stages to an entirely new world. I hope this has helped you. There are so many different ways to do things out there; it’s nice to share and learn new ways.

That being said, do you have any added questions to share?
