Any who, now I have to share my favorite Christmas cookie recipe. To be honest, I don’t bake (unless you consider buying pre-made cookie dough and throwing it in the oven baking). That’s about as far as I get into it lol. I know, shameful. But if I did bake, I would totally make these. They look scrumptious!

Favorite Christmas cookie recipe: Cran-Pistachio Cookies

Recipe and photo found from: The Girl Who Ate Everything

Ingredients

  • 1 (1 lb  1.5 ounce) pouch Betty Crocker Sugar Cookie Mix
  • 1 box  (4 serving size) pistachio instant pudding and pie filling mix
  • 1/4 cup  flour
  • 1/2 cup  butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup  dry roasted salted pistachio nuts, chopped
  • 1/2 cup  dried cranberries, chopped
  • optional – green food coloring (I didn’t add any but if  you wanted them extra green you could)

Instructions

  1. Preheat  oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In  a large bowl stir cookie mix, pudding, and flour. Add melted butter and eggs and  stir until incorporated.
  3. Add  pistachios and cranberries and mix well.
  4. Drop  by rounded spoonfuls onto a parchment lined cookie sheet and slightly flatten  with fingertips.
  5. Bake  for 8-10 minutes. The only way you can ruin these cookies is to overbake them!  If you bake them too long you will lose the soft texture and they won’t be as  green. They will not look done but take them out and let them sit on the pan for  about 2 minutes. Trust me.
  6. Cool  on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container. Makes about 2 dozen  cookies.

Now for the fun stuff-the Born in Flames spotlight:

born-in-flames-final

(donated book to hop)

Red mirrored scales race up my arms as the haze of pain blurs my vision. My bones crack, breaking to realign. I scream. It is then that the realization of my unavoidable fate sinks in; I am of a dying race. I am dragon.

Aurora Megalos, orphaned and teetering on the edge of adulthood, thought finding her past would curb the sting of being an outcast. Having no memories of the time before she awoke on her foster mother’s doorstep, she yearns for the emptiness inside her to be filled. With her fellow orphaned best friend, Fenn, by her side, she has nothing to lose and everything to gain. But something powerful stirred within her that she couldn’t explain. Something wanted out.

In the dark of night, a crazed Seer erases everything she’s ever known with an impending prophecy. She now faces two paths. Return to her true home to protect a dying race against a growing evil, or stay hidden in the safety of our realm with a shot at a true love. With a vengeful Arch Enemy stopping at nothing to see her dead, she’s running out of time; a decision must be made. What would you choose?

Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble in ebook or paperback.

Here is a small excerpt:

Preface

THE CALL OF THE ORB was strong now that it rested in my hands. A song thrummed in my chest as I felt the veins in my neck beating wildly. Looking at it now, the change wasn’t as scary as I had thought it would be. Even with knowing that I could be staring my possible death in the face. The question was—would I be strong enough to sustain these powers given to me? Maybe I was just scared of The Fates choosing my destiny, or maybe I was scared that what was about to happen would forever change my life. Either way, growing up I had always hoped that my life would mean something more than just being a foster child, but this, this was much bigger than anyone could imagine. And what lies ahead? Well if it’s anything compared to what I am going through now, then I expect my life to fall into a whole new level of crazy. And I think it may be just what I was looking for.

And scene!

This was the first novel I ever wrote, and I wrote it back in 2009. It is my baby and the one that started it all. The book that launched a thousand books-har har. I don’t think I could ever write a thousand books, but it was the beginning to a path I was always destined for. I love writing. It has been my saving grace. Just when I thought I had reached my potential, that my life would be nothing more than working for a company hoping for a raise and waiting for the endless five o’clock to arrive, writing came along and swept me off my feet.

I haven’t looked back since.

It’s magical, finding your dreams. It’s something I can never get enough of, even when I am dead a$$ tired. I eat, sleep, and dream about my characters and their stories, and I have all of my fans to thank for continuing to support and follow me on this amazing journey.

Teaser Tuesday

Teaser TuesdayHello once again, readers!!!

How is your holiday week so far? Good? Busy? Anyone preparing for Black Friday?

I am entertaining my two year-old and six year-old. And by entertaining I mean being tied up and put in their closet jail. But it’s okay, they left me alongside of plush Buzz and Woody so at least I am in good company. And I am let out when they grow hungry on good behavior from time to time. Help me! Who could ask for more?

Sounds fun right? o_O

Any who, today is teaser Tuesday and since I am now working on approving the copy edits for From the Embers, I figured I would share a teaser from chapter 1.

She was staring at me. “The end of days has begun, or as your old realm is calling it, the war. There is much to catch up on and very little time to do so.”

“Catch up on? What month are we in?” I asked, shivering.

Her gaze fell flat.

Astral shifted and took a gentle step in between us. “Forgive her, Alexis. Being in the Hall of Knowledge for such a long time does make one dizzy-minded.”

“But I wasn’t there for that long. Hours if anything,” I stated. I was confused and felt on the verge of snapping. The dragon in me felt suppressed.

His smile was patient when he tilted his head at me. “Oh, but it was much longer, Little Flame. You’ve been gone for almost a year in the time of the living. We are in November…again.”

And scene. A lot of mixed emotions bombard Aurora when she wakes in the realm. A lot of time has passed and a lot of hope was lost. She must reunite the people in the realm in hopes that they will fight back against Zordon and his steadily growing army.

Are you as excited as I am?

WIP Wednesday

wip_wednesdayHello once again, readers!

Since I’m trying to get back into the swing of things with this blog (I know, I know…I have shamefully neglected you), what better way to do it than to get back to the basics of why I started this thing.

To talk about writing.

It seems to be what we all love doing, right? (I think most of you who actually read my posts are writers)

have been putting my time in as far as writing is concerned, just not on this blog. With finishing the trilogy and then working on my WIP, I find myself wiped out by the time I sit down and fiddle with the old blog. It’s so sad and it really bums me out because I used to love writing to you day after day. Who knew there was so much work behind being an author… most of which includes marketing. But if you noticed, I did find the time to finally update the look of the blog. What do you think?

I know, sooo not important.

Back to the point. Today is Wednesday. Some of you may refer to it as hump day…but I choose to stick with WIP day. As you may know, I have been working on my NaNo project from last year. Starfall. I plan on having it out by the end of this year and as it stands, it’s 75% written. The odds are looking to be in my favor.

Insert the crazy evil laugh…muhahahaha.

*crickets*

Okay… let’s skip over the boring small talk and get to the point. I’m running out of things to say and you’ve probably rolled your eyes by now.

Here’s a small snippet from the chapter I am currently working on:

Gavin spun around, jiggling the doorknob, but it wouldn’t budge. “Either we’re in the right place at the right time,” he began with a strained smile, “or we’re screwed.”

“Good pep talk,” Jaxen muttered, squeezing my hand.

We crept forward, unsure of where to go. Jezi assured Jaxen through their connection that I would feel it within the minute we were close to the seal.

This was only partially encouraging.

“Left or right?” Jaxen asked as we approached a fork in the confining hall. Colored light strained through the stained glass windows above us.

“Stella?” Gavin asked me. “Cassie has no idea from here. This is all you.”

“Neither does Jezi,” Jaxen added.

I sighed and closed my eyes, letting myself zone into my surroundings. A form of uplifting energy filled my senses as the magic in me sorted through the thin layer of magic around us. Slowly, behind my lids, the path appeared as a shimmering light.

“We go right,” I answered securely when my eyes opened.

“Are you sure?” Jaxen asked as we all took to the right, staying close to the walls.

“Have a little faith,” Gavin said quietly behind me. “We are in a church after all.” He chuckled to himself and I couldn’t help but shake my head and smile.

And scene.

I’m very excited about this story and the direction it is heading in. Witches, Hunters, Demons, and maybe a little Fae action… it’s everything I’m into wrapped up into one book. Romance, action, mystery, magic, treachery… Is it strange that I still can’t believe I am writing? I have two novels published and still don’t consider myself an author? Even after four novels written?

Maybe not. I know…I’m going off topic again.

But any way, have a great WIP day. Be sure to get your writing in!

Now to leave you with a question: How many of you watch Dexter and how do you feel about the storyline so far? I’m pretty bummed that the series is coming to an end. It’s one of my faves. I like the woman they brought in as his mother figure, though it is a little weird.

How Do You Say Goodbye?

photo3Hello once again, Readers!!!

I know I have been MIA for some time now, but that is because I have thrown myself into finishing this trilogy. Guess what!? Last night I finally reached that moment where the final two words were written.

The end.

*tear*

I am beginning to feel separation anxiety. How do I say goodbye to my characters who I have become so close to? How do I move on to another set of characters?

I have my WIP from NaNo just waiting for me to jump back into, and for a while I couldn’t wait to finish this trilogy so I could get back to it, but now that my first draft is complete…ahhh.

There is so much pressure with this one. This is it. There will be no fourth. Every idea, every foreshadow, every minor plot, they all have to come together in an explosion of epicosity. The final battle between good and evil. Deciding their fates from that point on.

When I started this whole idea back in 2009, I had no idea that it would actually get published. I had a faint idea of where the story was going, but never all of this. I approached the second novel with a heavy mind, wondering if I could do it. Would I be able to write another? And I was surprised once again by how easily the words flowed out. The characters took me places that I had never imagined before. They wanted their story told.

Which brings us to the third. From the Embers.

Last night I finished it; the final chapter in Aurora’s story. My heart pounded and my hands shook as I typed those last two words. My throat felt tight. I couldn’t tell if I was delighted or sad. I didn’t know if I wanted to do a happy dance or cry. I thought maybe I was having a bit of a panic attack. So I went to bed.

My characters have literally been put through hell. The story and all its many layers have unraveled, and the ending sentence is dangling before me. Am I being a bit dramatic? Maybe, but this is my first real ending. This was my first project. This idea that sprung to life is what changed my life. I will forever be grateful to these characters for showing me where my path rested in life.

Okay, now I am getting emotional so I need to stop. I still have a ton of editing to do with it. It is, after all, the first draft. I still have many more months to spend working on them between wrapping up and publishing Embracing the Flames, and then getting through my own personal edits and read-throughs to send From the Embers in to my publisher for review.

So it’s not really over yet. I just can’t believe how everything turned out. Bittersweet and definitely not what I had expected in the beginning. I mean that in a good way. To all of my readers, you are in for a surprise. ;)

Any who, that is all for now. Now to leave you with a question: Who’s ready for Game of Thrones!?

Teaser Tuesday: Embracing the Flames

embracing2_fullHello once again, Readers! Guess what!? It’s Teaser Tuesday (in case you didn’t sum that up from the title of  today’s post). Hey…I’m just looking out for you, you know.

Any who, I thought I would share a snippet from Embracing the Flames since it is so close to being released. My publisher is currently reading through it, making her notes and edits, so what you read may not be exactly the same when it’s finally published.

This particular scene is from chapter 6. Fenn and Aurora were spending some quiet time together which turned into playing a form of hide-and-seek. As usual, Aurora is a magnet for trouble. She heads into the forest behind Astral’s house, but instead of finding Fenn, she finds her first encounter with a Necromancer-a race she has been told to stay clear from.

When she finds Fenn, she tries to tell him about the man in the forest and that they need to run, but he decides he needs to take a look (typical guy). When he finds nothing, they start to leave, which is when Shiron decides to show himself. After a few attempts of dispelling him with magic, Fenn and Aurora discover that Necromancers are immune to Mage magic.

That is when all hell breaks loose and that is all I will give up! Here it is:

Shiron’s face scrunched for a moment before looking at Fenn, assessing the threat. He pursed his lips and said, “Oh? And who’s going to stop me? You?” He was quick, the daggers already in his hands, as if they had appeared there by his will alone.

“Run!” Fenn yelled as he punched the guy, using the shock to jump on top of him. They fell to the ground with a heavy thud, rolling through the muck and brush, fists flying in the midst of the leaves.

At first, I did as he said, running from the pure fear of death, but then I heard Fenn’s pained cry. I stopped suddenly, muck flying up around me, and I turned back, thriving on anger and rage.

My dragon spirit was already trying to push forward, fueled by the desire to kill whoever was hurting my mate. I couldn’t let anything happen to him. I knew I had to let my dragon side take over in order to protect him. With regret, I let go and slumped into the darkness that came with not being in control.

When I came to, I was lying on the soft grass underneath the Jacaranda tree. Fenn was huddled over me. “Aurora, wake up please,” he said, his hands shaking.

My first thought was to make sure he was okay. “I’m fine, I’m fine,” he confirmed, his lip caked in blood and both eyes swollen and black. “You saved my life.”

I tried to sit up but was hit by an overwhelming pain throughout my left side. I reached over and felt dampness on my conjured shirt. Slowly, I brought my hand up. It was covered in blood. “I’ve been stabbed,” I panicked.

“I know,” Fenn rushed out. “I’m going to open a portal and take us back, okay? I wanted to get you dressed first.” His face was pale, and his voice was full of worry. He was shaking all over. I tried to reach out to his misted eyes in an attempt to ease his worry.

“Okay,” I said, taking his hand instead. As I stood, I felt faint. “I’ve depleted myself,” I admitted. A nauseous wave struck me hard. I stumbled forward, unable to hold myself up any longer.

My vision started to falter, and my heart pounded against my chest in a rush. “Something’s happening. Oh no.”

Fenn was right there, catching me before I hit the ground. “I need you to go get Astral,” I muttered as the pull of my Oraculus weighed on me. “Zordon-”

“Hang on,” I heard him call. And then, as usual, everything went black.

And scene.

There is way more to this scene, but of course that will come with reading the book when it is published. Hope you enjoyed!

Tagging Thyme Meme: 11 Weird Questions Answered

160bde405d424254eb0fb32b1f0fa344Hello once again, Readers!!! I was nominated by Story Addict for the 11 Weird Questions Meme. I didn’t have anything else to post today so I figured why not?

Let us begin!

1. What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten in public?

I can’t think of anything that was strange. I don’t stray too far from the norm when it comes to food.
2. If you had to go on an adventure, with elves, dwarves, or hobbits, who would you take and why?

My husband for sure. He knows everything there is to know about each of them and would probably fit right in. He has hobbit feet. I would totally be safe. ;)
3. You are at a rural retreat lodge somewhere deep in Wisconsin or Canada. You are approached by a taxidermist who hands you a stuffed badger and asks you to put it in your lap. What do you do next?

I would most likely say no because I don’t like touching dead things and I especially wouldn’t do it for a stranger who approaches me by asking me to hold something dead. *shudder*
 4. If you were given biscotti, would you prefer it with coffee, tea, or hot chocolate?

Coffee…Irish cream flavored. Yum.
5. In your opinion, who is the funniest man or woman alive today (comedian)?

I’d have to go with Dane Cook. The Kool-Aid man was one of my favorite skits.
6. If you were given thirty seconds on television to say something, what would it be?

I would probably freeze up and stare at the camera like a weirdo lol.
 7. What is your idea of the most romantic date setting ever?

A late-night picnic under the stars followed by camping. No distractions and hours of good conversation.
8. If you could go on one date with a movie or television star, who would it be and why?

Sheesh. I wouldn’t because I love my husband, but since this is not real and it will never happen, I would have to go with Ryan Gosling because I love his movies.
9. What is the worst song you have ever heard?

Lol. Umm…I usually stick to what I like and branch out in genre so I haven’t really run into anything that I would say was the worst.
10. If you could live anywhere else, where would it be?

Somewhere over seas. At least that is my dream. I have no idea if I would like it and I would probably miss home, but for now, that is where I would go.
11. Who- in your opinion- was the greatest person to ever live?

Gosh, I don’t know. I don’t really think that way about life. There are a ton of people for many different reasons that I respect and am grateful for their choices and influences on the world though.

Now to tag. Muhahaha. I am tagging anyone and everyone who reads this!
